Key Events Leading to World War One

Introduction:
Less than one hundred years ago saw the outbreak of a world war that was to become known as the Great War. This activity is designed to provide you with insight into the key trigger points that led to its outbreak in 1914 and to consider what were the key events of World War One.

Prior to beginning this task consider which members of your family were alive during this time. (You may like to draw your family tree). Remember a study of history is not just about dates and events but people and experiences.

Using the above sites to assist, you are required to develop a timeline which includes 8 - 12 significant events of the lead up to World War One. Ensure that each event is listed in chronological order and provide a brief explanation of each event (two to three sentences).

The timeline should be developed as a word document with pictures included to support a number of the events you decide to list.

Use the website above plus the work we have done in class to further your understanding of the alliances that were in place in the lead up to World War One. Draw a diagram to clearly show the alliances that existed across Europe.

Big Question:
In recent years there have been a number of key events that could have led to war on a world scale. What reasons can be provided for why a World War has not occurred in the later part of the Twentieth Century and first part of the Twenty First Century?
